Malus domestica 'Purple Haze'
This dessert apple is very unusual and rivals the best of the crab apples for ornamental interest. It produces beautiful dark pink blossom in the spring and dark red foliage that matures to dark green by late summer. The fruits are purple with bright red flesh and heart shaped white centres. The tree has a naturally columnar habit and will reach a maximum height and spread of 3m (10ft) x 1m (3ft) in 10 years. Ideal for small spaces and containers. The tree is approximately 90-120cm (3-4ft) tall on despatch.
Pollination: Self-fertile.
Season: Sept-Oct.
Rubus phoenicolasius
Use this plant to bring some winter cheer to the garden! Originating from Eastern Asia, the Japanese Wineberry is grown as much for its ornamental value as it is for its edible fruits. The plant is very decorative - it has dark red stems that are covered in soft red bristles. The calyx (which surrounds the flowers) are also covered in fine red bristles and contrast beautifully against the lime-green foliage which turns almost yellow-white at the time of fruiting. The dark red canes really stand out in the winter and look particularly attractive on a frosty morning. The berries are dark red when fully ripe, juicy and sweet and have a strong raspberry flavour. They are delicious picked straight from the bush but can also be cooked and used to make jam. Plant 1.8m (6ft) apart.
Season: late July - late Aug.
Plant size: 2 litre pot.
Rheum hybridum 'Fulton's Strawberry Surprise'
This outstanding new variety was voted the ‘best flavoured rhubarb’ in RHS Wisley Trials. The plants are strong growing, producing eye-catching vivid red stems.
Available for delivery: late November - mid April.
Crataegus laevigata 'Crimson Cloud'
NEW! This small, rounded, thorny tree provides a wonderful blanket of colour during the spring. In May it produces a mass of lightly scented, small, single, crimson-red flowers with pronounced white centres which are popular with bees and butterflies and contrast beautifully against the glossy, dark green, deeply-lobed leaves. In the autumn the foliage turns to warm shades of yellow and bronze and the tiny red berries (haws) that appear are much loved by birds. The tree is extremely hardy and will do well in most locations including exposed, coastal sites.
Height x spread in 10 years: up to 4m (13ft) x 3m (10ft).
