Grow your own delicious strawberries. Planted before the end of July, you will reap your first harvest this summer! This collection consists of 24 strawberry plants, 6 each of the following:
Strawberry 'Anablanca' (mid)
NEW! Closely related to the Pineberry, this is a very rare white summer
fruiting strawberry. The berries start off green and turn paler as they
ripen to produce a sweet and juicy fruit with white flesh, studded with
attractively coloured red seeds. The flavour is aromatic and reminiscent
of pineapple. The plant size is small compared with modern varieties.
Strawberry 'Cambridge Favourite' (mid)
Probably
the best known of the older varieties, this much loved strawberry is
often found on pick your own farms. Many gardeners refuse to grow
anything else! Ripening midseason, it is one of the heaviest cropping
varieties available and can be relied on to crop well under a wide range
of weather conditions. The medium sized berries are soft, sweet and
juicy and have a very good flavour. Resistant to mildew.
Strawberry 'Frau Mieze Schindler' (mid)
NEW!
One of the best tasting strawberries in the world! Bred in Dresden in
1925, it remains the most widely grown variety in German gardens.
Scientific tests have shown Schindler to have a high concentration of
the flavour component that gives the alpine strawberry its distinctive
and exquisite flavour. Yields are vastly superior to alpine strawberries
but modest compared to modern varieties. Plant size is small but
disease resistance is good. Requires a pollinator (we recommend
Cambridge Favourite).
Strawberry 'Mara des Bois' (perpetual)
This
very special perpetual fruiting strawberry is the only variety to
combine the aromatic flavour of the wild alpine strawberry with the
fruit size and yield of the modern cultivars. When fully ripe, the
medium sized berries are extremely fragrant and develop an intense
flavour and aroma similar to the woodland strawberry. Highly sought
after by top chefs, if you travel to France and visit the local markets
you will see fruits of this wonderful variety on sale when in season.
Resistant to powdery mildew.
