Morus Nigra 'Chelsea' (syn. 'King James I')

Black Mulberry trees are grown for their ornamental value and delicious dark red, almost black fruits. The fruits are very juicy and have a very distinct sweet-sharp flavour which surpasses that of any other berry. They can be eaten fresh or used in jams. The trees are very attractive with large, heart shaped leaves. This very old variety (syn. 'King James I'), originates from a tree that existed in the Chelsea Physic Garden (formerly Swan Walk) during the reign of King James I. During the second world war the last remaining tree was removed to make way for an air raid shelter but cuttings were taken first, ensuring that this magnificent variety lived on for future generations. The tree crops early in its life. Plant in a sunny, well drained site with a deep loam soil.

Bred in the U.K.

Pollination: Self-fertile.

Available for delivery: May - late August.
