Rhubarb 'Thompson's Terrifically Tasty' (3 crowns)

Rhubarb 'Thompson's Terrifically Tasty' (3 crowns)

Rhubarb 'Thompson's Terrifically Tasty' (3 crowns) Code: RHU005

£19.95 19.9500 In Stock New

Rheum hybridum 'Thompson's Terrifically Tasty'

This aptly named variety goes back more than 80 years to the village of Great Oakley in Essex. It has been selected year on year and replanted by the Thompsons, who grow rhubarb commercially for sale into the London wholesale markets. It's great attribute is that it is the very first outdoor rhubarb on the market, as early as February, which means that it competes with the forced 'Golden Triangle' rhubarb but without all the bother of harvesting in the cellar with a candle on your head! In the first New Year flush the stems are shortish but thick and plentiful. The second crop in mid summer is an altogether larger stem of fine mid red colour. The flavour is delicious and when cooked with a handful of elderflowers makes a superb dessert.

Bred in the U.K.

Available for delivery: late November - mid April.

Rhubarb is delicious in desserts and as it is so easy to grow and takes up very little room it deserves a place in every garden. The plants will tolerate full sun or partial shade, but it is important to make sure they are planted in a well-drained soil. It is equally suited to container growing. Our rhubarb crowns are supplied as large hand selected crowns and are available from late November to mid April. Livingstone is supplied in 9cm pots and is available all year.

For better establishment we strongly advise using Rootgrow when planting (as recommended in RHS planting guidelines).
