Strawberry Plants 'Malling Centenary' (10 SuperCrowns)

Strawberry Plants 'Malling Centenary' (10 SuperCrowns) Code: STR206

£24.95 inc. p&p 24.9500 In Stock New

Fragaria x ananassa 'Malling Centenary'

Bred in the UK by East Malling Research, this new variety was chosen to mark the 100th anniversary of the research station in 2013 and is considered to be the British strawberry of the future! Bred for the supermarkets but with the aim of putting flavour back into the berry, it has a unique combination of outstanding taste, heavy yields and good shelf life. The fruits are very juicy and the eating quality is consistently good with high sugar levels and an excellent strawberry flavour. We think that Malling Centenary also has great potential as a garden variety - Michelin-starred chef Michel Roux Jr. was certainly impressed with the flavour when he was filmed tasting the fruit for the BBC's Great British Food Revival and the variety was shortlisted for 'Plant of the Year' at the 2013 Chelsea Flower Show.

Commercial growers maximise the yield of the 60 day crop by planting with hand graded plants, carefully selected to ensure a crown size of 14mm or more in diameter. With our 14-18mm SuperCrowns you too can maximise your 60 day crop. Please note: SuperCowns are only supplied as coldstored plants for spring/summer delivery.

If you have ever grown your own strawberries before you will know that the aroma and flavour is far superior to that of shop bought fruit. What’s more, they take up a minimum amount of room and are easy to grow. All they require is a sunny, sheltered spot. Plants can be spaced 30cm (12in) apart in the open ground. Alternatively they can be grown in growbags (10 plants per growbag), or in hanging baskets or containers.

Our hand graded strawberry plants are raised on selected sites in the UK under the Plant Health Propagation Scheme (PHPS) and are guaranteed to be free from pests and diseases.

Unless otherwise stated in the product description, fresh dug strawberry runners are available from mid October to late November and will crop the following season. Coldstored strawberry plants are available from March to early July. These will crop 60-90 days after planting. Please note, some varieties (where stated in the product description) are only available as coldstored plants.
