Standard Fig Tree 'Violette de Bordeaux' Code: FGS206

£37.95 37.9500 In Stock New

Ficus carica 'Violette de Bordeaux' (syn. 'Negronne')

This standard fig tree is ideal where space is restricted and will make an attractive feature in a large container on a sunny patio. Pruned to shape on the nursery, it is supplied with a 90cm (3ft) clear stem and a bushy head. Total height on despatch 1.2-1.5m (4-5ft). This ancient variety has been cultivated at the Palace of Versailles since the time of Louis XIV.  It has very good cold resistance (Versailles being about as cold as you get in Northern France in the winter). The tree is strong growing and produces two crops, one in July and the other in October. The purple-black fruits are of medium size and have a lovely sweet flavour. It is said to be one of the most perfumed figs when fully ripe.

Pollination: Self-fertile.

Season: July & Oct.

Plant size: 4.5 litre pot.

Available for delivery: from late October 2021.

Although, fig trees are associated with Mediterranean countries, with the correct choice of variety and given a sunny, sheltered site, they can be grown outside throughout the UK with great success. Figs picked fresh from the garden are juicy, sweet and fragrant. They are very useful for covering large areas such as a south or south-west facing wall or fence and trained as a fan they will eventually reach 2m (6ft 6in) high and 3-3.6m (10-12ft) wide. They also make ideal container plants on a sun-drenched patio, where they will make a very attractive garden feature. Fig trees require root restriction and for ease they can be planted in a Root Control Bag.

Our fig trees are supplied in containers and are available for despatch throughout the year.
