NEW! Use this plant to bring some winter cheer to the garden! Originating from Eastern Asia, the Japanese Wineberry is grown as much for its ornamental value as it is for its edible fruits. The plant is very decorative - it has dark red stems that are covered in soft red bristles. The calyx (which surrounds the flowers) are also covered in fine red bristles and contrast beautifully against the lime-green foliage which turns almost yellow-white at the time of fruiting. The dark red canes really stand out in the winter and look particularly attractive on a frosty morning. The berries are dark red when fully ripe, juicy and sweet and have a strong raspberry flavour. They are delicious picked straight from the bush but can also be cooked and used to make jam. Plant 1.8m (6ft) apart.

It produces large open bunches of beautiful vivid pink berries in the autumn that slowly turn pale pink and last well in to winter. The berries not only look lovely, they provide winter food for hungry birds. Clusters of creamy white flowers adorn the branches in the spring and are popular with bees. The large blue-green pinnate leaves are very attractive and turn to shades of red and orange in the autumn. Suitable for most soil types, but prefers a moist, free draining site.

They are less dependent on weather conditions than honey bees, operating in cloudy conditions and colder weather.

Pomona Fruits can now supply colonies of the native British bumblebee (Bombus Terrestris audax). The colony consists of a queen and workers, with a supply of ‘nectar’ to feed the bumblebees if a natural source of nectar is in short supply. Place your colony in the garden, open it and the bumblebees will fly out to forage for pollen. At the end of the life of the colony, the bumblebees will die off. However new queens will be produced that will fly away to create colonies of their own. Bumblebees are docile and will only sting if severely aggravated.

Supplied with a reusable wooden shelter made from FSC-timber to protect the colony from the weather if used outdoors. The colony can also be purchased without the wooden shelter.
