Plums, gages and damsons are a wonderful choice of tree to grow in the garden as in favourable conditions they will crop reliably, producing masses of fruit year after year. Choose a sunny, sheltered spot.

The modern way to grow fruit trees is to train them as vertical cordons. These space-saving columnar trees are attractive as well as fruitful and are perfect for smaller gardens. Cordon plum trees can be spaced as close as 90cm (3ft) apart and are also ideal planted in containers on a sunny patio or balcony. Cordons should have their ultimate height restricted to 1.8-2.4m (6-8ft) and their fruiting laterals pruned during the summer months in order to retain their compact columnar shape.

Our cordon plum, gage and damson trees are grafted onto St Julien 'A' rootstock, which will produce a tree of medium vigour that is easy to grow, easy to control and easy to pick. Trees can be grown as vertical cordons (just use a stake to support them) or oblique cordons (against a wall or fence). They are also perfect for container growing.

Bare root trees are only available when they are fully dormant (usually from late November/December until late March). Where we quote a height on despatch, this includes the root system.

Don't forget to include tree stakes and ties on your order.  All young fruit trees require staking and for better establishment we strongly advise using Rootgrow when planting (as recommended in RHS planting guidelines).

£23.95 inc. p&pStrawberry 'Malling Centenary' (Summer Potted Plants)Bred in the UK by East Malling Research, this new variety was chosen to mark the 100th anniversary of the research station in 2013 and is considered to be the British strawberry of the future! Bred for the supermarkets but with the aim of putting flavour back into the berry, it has a unique combination of outstanding taste, heavy yields and good shelf life. The fruits are very juicy and the eating quality is consistently good with high sugar levels and an excellent strawberry flavour. We think that Malling Centenary also has great potential as a garden variety - Michelin-starred chef Michel Roux Jr. was certainly impressed with the flavour when he was filmed tasting the fruit for the BBC's Great British Food Revival and the variety was shortlisted for 'Plant of the Year' at the 2013 Chelsea Flower Show.Buy Now
