Honeyberries (Lonicera caerulea) are a member of the honeysuckle family. They have been grown for many centuries in Japan and Russia but are still an unfamiliar fruit in Europe. Honeyberries are grown commercially on a wide scale in Canada. They ripen earlier than other berried fruits so provide an earlier start for the fruit pickers!
In Canada, honeyberries are known as ‘Haksap’, which comes from the ancient Japanese name ‘Haskappu’, which translates to ‘berry of long life and good vision’. Honeyberries are extremely high in vitamin C and antioxidants.
Honeyberry breeding has come a long way in the last 20 years and we are delighted to be able to now offer some outstanding new varieties from the Haksap breeding program at the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Canada. These new honeyberry varieties have been bred to combine the most desirable features of the fruit - flavour, berry size and resistance to frost and have revolutionised honeyberry growing.
Honeyberry bushes are exceptionally cold hardy – they can tolerate temperatures down to -20°C and the flowers can survive temperatures down to -7°C. They are therefore an ideal crop to grow in colder parts of the UK where it can be challenging to grow other berried fruits. Honeyberries are now being grown commercially in many parts of Scotland including the Highlands, where they thrive in the cooler climate. They will also do well in the south and are easy to grow in the garden. With proper care, honeyberry bushes can remain productive for 20-30 years!
Honeyberry plants are not self-fertile and it is important to plant two different varieties that flower at a similar time for cross-pollination.
For better establishment we strongly advise using Rootgrow when planting (as recommended in RHS planting guidelines).
