Cherries are an expensive luxury in the shops so it makes perfect sense to grow your own. In the past cherries were renowned for their excessive vigour, making them inappropriate for small gardens but with the use of modern rootstocks that is no longer the case.

We offer a range of UK grown cherry trees that are suitable for smaller gardens throughout the UK. Choose a sunny, sheltered spot.

Our cherry trees are grafted onto Colt rootstock, which will produce a tree with medium vigour that can be trained into a bush, cordon, pyramid or fan.

  • Bush cherry trees will typically grow to 3.6-4.6m (12-15ft) in height and spread. Acid cherries do not grow as large as sweet cherries.
  • If space is limited, consider growing cordons. These columnar trees should be restricted to 1.8m-2.4m (6-8ft) in height and can be spaced 90cm (3ft) apart. They can be grown as vertical cordons (just use a stake to support them) or oblique cordons (against a wall or fence). They are also perfect for container growing.
  • You can also train a cherry tree as a fan against a south facing wall or fence or as a pyramid tree. For these two methods of training you will need to start off with a one year old tree (only available in selected varieties).
  • The Morello (acid) cherry is more hardy than sweet cherries and is an ideal subject for growing as a fan against a north-facing wall or fence.

Bare root trees are only available when they are fully dormant (usually from late November/December until late March). Where we quote a height on despatch, this includes the root system.

Don't forget to include tree stakes and ties on your order.  All young fruit trees require staking and for better establishment we strongly advise using Rootgrow when planting (as recommended in RHS planting guidelines).
