Boysenberry Thornless Bush

Boysenberry Thornless Bush

Boysenberry Thornless Bush Code: BKB018

£20.95 20.9500 In Stock New

Rubus ursinus x idaeusare

This wonderful tasting hybrid berry is thought to be a cross between a blackberry and a loganberry. The exact origins are unclear but it was developed in the early 1920's by Rudolph Boysen a horticulturist from California. The short shelf life of the berries led to a decline in commercial production but it is still widely grown in New Zealand and remains popular with fruit enthusiasts in the UK. It produces heavy crops of purplish-black berries that taste like wild blackberries, only sweeter. The plants are strong and vigorous in their growing habit, hardy and drought resistant. Plant 2.4m (8ft) apart.

RHS Perfect for Pollinators

Season: late July - late Aug.

Plant size: 3 litre pot.

Available for delivery: all year.

Blackberries and hybrid berries (arising from crosses between raspberries and blackberries) will thrive under a wide range of site and soil conditions and need not take up much room in your garden. They will tolerate sun or shade and are useful for covering a north facing wall, trellis or fence. With a selection of different varieties it is possible to harvest fruit from early July until the autumn. Although bursting with flavour when eaten fresh, surplus fruit freezes well and can be used to make excellent jam and crumbles! Trained plants can grow and be maintained to a height of 1.5-1.8m (5-6ft) and should be planted 1.8-2.4m (6-8ft) apart. Pot grown blackberry bushes are available for despatch throughout the year.

Don't forget to include a Gripple Wire Tensioning Kit on your order, the easy way to support blackberry bushes.  For better establishment we strongly advise using Rootgrow when planting (as recommended in RHS planting guidelines).
