Rubus idaeus 'Tulameen'

This modern mid/late summer fruiting raspberry is now firmly established as the most widely grown variety on account of its fruit quality and heavy yields. The berries are very large, bright red and glossy and have an excellent, sweet aromatic flavour. The canes have few spines and are easy to pick and manage. They emerge very late in the spring making them less susceptible to frost damage.

Long cane raspberries are supplied with approximately 110cm (3ft 6in) of the previous season’s cane still attached so you can plant them and harvest your first crop from July onwards in the same growing season!  In order to maximise the crop in the first season, long cane plants are selected on the basis of cane height, thickness, root system and the number of pre-formed flower buds. For best results, plant early in the year in to ground that is well-drained and well-prepared.

RHS Award of Garden Merit  RHS Perfect for Pollinators

Season: mid/late Summer (early July - early Aug).

Raspberries are an excellent crop to grow as once established they will crop heavily, producing up to 1.5kg (over 3lbs) of fruit per cane for 10 years or more. They can be planted as close as 40cm (16in) apart with a gap of 1.5m (5ft) between rows. When planting it is important to choose a well-drained, sunny or semi-shaded spot and to incorporate plenty of compost or well-rotted manure.

Our hand graded raspberry canes are raised on selected sites in the UK, inspected by DEFRA for pests and diseases and certified under the Plant Health Propagation Scheme (PHPS).

Our top tips for success when planting raspberries:

  • Raspberries require a well-drained soil so if the soil is heavy, it is important that you improve the soil conditions and if necessary grow them on a raised bed or ridge.
  • Improve the soil structure by thorough digging before planting and if possible, mix well rotted manure or compost into the topsoil.
  • The canes should only be planted about 2-3 inches deep (this should be the depth indicated by the soil mark just above the roots on the main stem, or up to 1cm (½in) deeper). If the roots are planted too deep, it’s harder for the new shoots to emerge.
  • It is important not to plant the canes on ground where you have previously been growing raspberries (due to raspberry replant disease).
  • Raspberries are shallow rooted, so it is important to keep the bed well-watered in the first year from spring onwards.
  • Put some compost (2 litres per plant) in the planting hole, so the roots have something 'kind' to root into.

Don't forget to include a Gripple Wire Tensioning Kit on your order, the easy way to support raspberry canes.  For better establishment we strongly advise using Rootgrow when planting (as recommended in RHS planting guidelines).

(image for) Strawberry Plants 'Malling Centenary'
£24.95 inc. p&pStrawberry Plants 'Malling Centenary'Bred in the UK by East Malling Research, this new variety was chosen to mark the 100th anniversary of the research station in 2013 and is considered to be the British strawberry of the future! Bred for the supermarkets but with the aim of putting flavour back into the berry, it has a unique combination of outstanding taste, heavy yields and good shelf life. The fruits are very juicy and the eating quality is consistently good with high sugar levels and an excellent strawberry flavour. We think that Malling Centenary also has great potential as a garden variety - Michelin-starred chef Michel Roux Jr. was certainly impressed with the flavour when he was filmed tasting the fruit for the BBC's Great British Food Revival and the variety was shortlisted for 'Plant of the Year' at the 2013 Chelsea Flower Show.Buy Now
