Description

This collection consists of 2 honeyberry bushes, 1 each of the following:

Lonicera caerulea var. edulis 'Boreal Blizzard'

NEW! This fantastic new late season variety comes from the Haskap breeding program at the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Canada. It produces exceptionally large, tubular fruits that are two to three times heavier than standard honeyberry varieties. The fruits have a lovely, sweet, tangy flavour and are delicious eaten fresh. Ripens mid/late season.

Lonicera caerulea var. emphyllocalyx 'Giant's Heart'

NEW! This Japanese honeyberry is a very heavy cropping late season variety, capable of producing up to 4.5kg of fruit per bush. The large, deep blue berries are 2.5-3cm long and are sweet and juicy. Ideal for eating fresh, freezing or making jam. Ripens mid/late season.

Pollination: Honeyberry plants are not self-fertile and it is important to plant two different varieties that flower at a similar time for cross-pollination. The two varieties in this collection are compatible pollination partners.

Honeyberries (Lonicera caerulea) are a member of the honeysuckle family. They have been grown for many centuries in Japan and Russia but are still an unfamiliar fruit in Europe. Honeyberries are grown commercially on a wide scale in Canada. They ripen earlier than other berried fruits so provide an earlier start for the fruit pickers!

In Canada, honeyberries are known as ‘Haksap’, which comes from the ancient Japanese name ‘Haskappu’, which translates to ‘berry of long life and good vision’. Honeyberries are extremely high in vitamin C and antioxidants.

Honeyberry breeding has come a long way in the last 20 years and we are delighted to be able to now offer some outstanding new varieties from the Haksap breeding program at the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Canada. These new honeyberry varieties have been bred to combine the most desirable features of the fruit - flavour, berry size and resistance to frost and have revolutionised honeyberry growing.

Honeyberry bushes are exceptionally cold hardy – they can tolerate temperatures down to -20°C and the flowers can survive temperatures down to -7°C. They are therefore an ideal crop to grow in colder parts of the UK where it can be challenging to grow other berried fruits. Honeyberries are now being grown commercially in many parts of Scotland including the Highlands, where they thrive in the cooler climate. They will also do well in the south and are easy to grow in the garden. With proper care, honeyberry bushes can remain productive for 20-30 years!

Honeyberry plants are not self-fertile and it is important to plant two different varieties that flower at a similar time for cross-pollination.

Please note - where we quote a height on despatch, this is measured from the base of the pot.

For better establishment we strongly advise using Rootgrow when planting (as recommended in RHS planting guidelines).
