Malus domestica 'Purple Haze'
This dessert apple is very unusual and rivals the best of the crab apples for ornamental interest. It produces beautiful dark pink blossom in the spring and dark red foliage that matures to dark green by late summer. The fruits are purple with bright red flesh and heart shaped white centres. The tree has a naturally columnar habit and will reach a maximum height and spread of 3m (10ft) x 1m (3ft) in 10 years. Ideal for small spaces and containers. The tree is approximately 90-120cm (3-4ft) tall on despatch.
Use this plant to bring some winter cheer to the garden! Originating from Eastern Asia, the Japanese Wineberry is grown as much for its ornamental value as it is for its edible fruits. The plant is very decorative - it has dark red stems that are covered in soft red bristles. The calyx (which surrounds the flowers) are also covered in fine red bristles and contrast beautifully against the lime-green foliage which turns almost yellow-white at the time of fruiting. The dark red canes really stand out in the winter and look particularly attractive on a frosty morning. The berries are dark red when fully ripe, juicy and sweet and have a strong raspberry flavour. They are delicious picked straight from the bush but can also be cooked and used to make jam. Plant 1.8m (6ft) apart.
Season: late July - late Aug.
Plant size: 2 litre pot.
Rheum hybridum 'Fulton's Strawberry Surprise'

Malus x floribunda (Japanese crab)
Originating from Japan, this very attractive small tree provides one of the finest shows of blossom in the spring, flowering earlier than most other crabs. The flowers emerge from deep-pink buds in April/May and open to white with a pink blush, creating a cloud of colour. In the autumn the tree is covered in masses of small reddish-yellow crab apples that provide a feast for hungry birds and contrast beautifully with the warm bronze autumn foliage. The tree has a round head with slightly arching branches and will make a delightful addition to any garden. The tree is approximately 60-90cm (3-4ft) tall on despatch (including the roots).
Pollination: Self-fertile. Universal Pollinator.
Height x spread in 10 years: up to 4m (13ft).
