Rubus phoenicolasius
Use this plant to bring some winter cheer to the garden! Originating from Eastern Asia, the Japanese Wineberry is grown as much for its ornamental value as it is for its edible fruits. The plant is very decorative - it has dark red stems that are covered in soft red bristles. The calyx (which surrounds the flowers) are also covered in fine red bristles and contrast beautifully against the lime-green foliage which turns almost yellow-white at the time of fruiting. The dark red canes really stand out in the winter and look particularly attractive on a frosty morning. The berries are dark red when fully ripe, juicy and sweet and have a strong raspberry flavour. They are delicious picked straight from the bush but can also be cooked and used to make jam. Plant 1.8m (6ft) apart.
Season: late July - late Aug.
Plant size: 2 litre pot.
Rheum hybridum 'Livingstone'
The world’s first autumn-cropping rhubarb! This British bred variety will crop twice a year - in spring and again in the autumn as unlike other varieties it does not require a period of summer dormancy. The succulent red stalks have an excellent flavour and can be harvested May/June and again September-November. Heavy cropping and disease resistant.
Plant size: 9cm pot.
Available for delivery: all year.
Prunus 'Kanzan'
One of the showiest Japanese flowering cherries and probably the most widely grown, producing masses of dense double-pink blossom in late April. The spring foliage is coppery-red turning green in summer and then orange in autumn. The tree is strong growing with an upright habit and wide arching branches. Very reliable and easy to grow. Chalk tolerant.
Height x spread in 10 years: up to 5m (16ft).
