Pyrus communis 'Beurré Hardy'

Raised in 1820, this is one of the finest flavoured dessert pears and an excellent choice for the garden. The medium-large fruits are soft and juicy and almost completely covered in bronze russet. Sweet and aromatic with a hint of rosewater. Heavy cropping. Resistant to scab. The blossom is frost resistant but the tree requires a warm location.

Pear trees, like apple trees, are easy to grow and suffer with very few problems. We offer a range of delicious varieties that will crop well in our UK climate. Choose a sunny, sheltered site.

The modern way to grow fruit trees is to train them as vertical cordons. These space-saving columnar trees are attractive as well as fruitful and are perfect for smaller gardens. Cordon pear trees can be spaced as close as 60cm (2ft) apart and are also ideal planted in containers on a sunny patio or balcony. Cordons should have their ultimate height restricted to 1.8-2.4m (6-8ft) and their fruiting laterals pruned during the summer months in order to retain their compact columnar shape.

Our cordon pear trees are grafted onto Quince 'A' semi-dwarfing rootstock, which will produce a tree that is easy to grow, easy to control and promotes fruit production from an early age. They can be grown as vertical cordons (just use a stake to support them) or oblique cordons (against a wall or fence). They are also perfect for container growing.

Bare root trees are only available when they are fully dormant (usually from late November/December until late March). Where we quote a height on despatch, this includes the root system.

Don't forget to include tree stakes and ties on your order.  All young fruit trees require staking and for better establishment we strongly advise using Rootgrow when planting (as recommended in RHS planting guidelines).
