Morus Nigra 'Chelsea' (syn. 'King James I')

This very old variety (syn. 'King James I'), originates from a tree that existed in the Chelsea Physic Garden (formerly Swan Walk) during the reign of King James I. During the second world war the last remaining tree was removed to make way for an air raid shelter but cuttings were taken first, ensuring that this magnificent variety lived on for future generations. The tree crops early in its life. Plant in a sunny, well drained site with a deep loam soil.

Please note: Trees are pruned back to 30-45cm (12-18in) on the nursery to encourage a bushy framework. Height on despatch from base of pot is 60cm+ (2ft+).

Bred in the U.K.

Pollination: Self-fertile

Despatched within 14 days (unless ordered with bare root items).

Black mulberry trees (Morus Nigra) are grown for their ornamental value and delicious dark red, almost black fruits. The fruits are very juicy and have a very distinct sweet-sharp flavour which surpasses that of any other berry. They can be eaten fresh or used in jams. The trees are very attractive with large, heart shaped leaves.

Black Mulberry trees are slow growing but a mature tree can reach 6-9m (20-30ft). Where space is limited trees can be grown in a 95 litre Root Control Bag to restrict their size. Trees should be planted in a sunny, well drained site with a deep loam soil.

Bare root trees are only available when they are fully dormant (usually from late November/December until late March).

Please note - where we quote a height on despatch, this includes the root system.

Don't forget to include tree stakes and ties on your order.  All young fruit trees require staking and for better establishment we strongly advise using Rootgrow when planting (as recommended in RHS planting guidelines).

(image for) Rootex Root Control Bag (95 Litre)
£28.95 inc. p&pRootex Root Control Bag (95 Litre)A Rootex Bag will produce a tree with more fibrous roots, reduced vigour and will promote early fruiting. Rootex is a special patented copper coated fabric. When the root tip comes into contact with the copper it stops growing, the apical dominance is interrupted and new feeder (fibrous) roots develop further back towards the tree. This prevents roots from circling and enables better absorption of water and nutrients. Rootex is permeable, allowing water and nutrients to pass through it. A tree grown in a Rootex Bag can be transplanted to another site without damage to the root system even 10 years after it was originally planted. These large bags are ideal for large trees such as walnuts, chestnuts and mulberries. Width 45cm x length 45cm x depth 45cm. Capacity: 95 litres.Buy Now
