Malus 'John Downie'

The most popular crab apple for making jelly. Produces masses of pretty pink budded white blossom in the spring followed by bright red and orange fruits in the autumn that are sweet enough to be eaten raw when ripe.

Bred in the U.K.  RHS Perfect for Pollinators

Pollination: Self-fertile. Universal Pollinator.

Tree Form: Cordon.

Crab apples (Malus) are related to the common apple and are grown for their lavish display of spring flowers and edible fruits which can be made into jelly. They are also very useful pollinators as they have a long flowering period and are often interplanted in commercial apple orchards to assist with pollination.

The modern way to grow fruit trees is to train them as vertical cordons. These space-saving columnar trees are attractive as well as fruitful and are perfect for smaller gardens. Cordon crab apple trees can be spaced as close as 60cm (2ft) apart and are also ideal planted in containers on a sunny patio or balcony. Cordons should have their ultimate height restricted to 1.8-2.4m (6-8ft) and their fruiting laterals pruned during the summer months in order to retain their compact columnar shape.

Our cordon crab apple trees can be grown as vertical cordons (just use a stake to support them) or oblique cordons (against a wall or fence). They are also perfect for container growing.

Bare root trees are only available when they are fully dormant (usually from late November/December until late April). Where we quote a height on despatch, this includes the root system.

Don't forget to include tree stakes and ties on your order.  All young fruit trees require staking and for better establishment we strongly advise using Rootgrow when planting (as recommended in RHS planting guidelines).
