Sibley's Patio Medlar

Sibley's Patio Medlar Code: MSC022

£35.95 35.9500 In Stock New

This new patio medlar has been developed by fruit authority Will Sibley, who has for many years been working on a range of fruit trees for the home gardener. Naturally compact in habit, it has been grafted onto a dwarfing rootstock and will thrive in a container for many years to come. It is very decorative with lovely foliage, superb autumn tints and curious rose-hip type fruits that can be used to make wonderful medlar jelly. A four year old tree will produce up to 30 medlars. Can be kept restricted to a height of 1.2m (4ft).

Supplied as a one year old tree in a 4 litre pot. The tree is grafted at about 30cm (1ft) above soil level and has 2-3 shoots about 20cm (8in) long that will quickly develop into a bushy head.

Pollination: Self-fertile.

Season: Oct - Dec.

Plant size: 4 litre pot.

Available for delivery: all year.

Please note: Sibley's Patio Medlar is excluded from the 'Buy any 2 Pot Grown Fruit Trees SAVE £5' offer.

Medlars produce large white flowers in the spring followed by russety rose-hip type fruits and magnificent orange-red autumn leaf colour. The fruits should be stored for several weeks and eaten after the texture has gone soft, at which stage they develop a lovely caramel-like flavour.  The fruits are excellent eaten raw with wine, port and cheese and can also be used to make an exquisite amber jelly for game and other meats. Medlar trees are hardy but will crop best if positioned in an open, sunny site. With the exception of Sibley's Patio Medlar, trees are supplied bare-rooted and will be 1.2-1.5m (4-5ft) high on despatch. Trees are available from late November to late April.

Don't forget to include tree stakes and ties on your order.  All young fruit trees require staking and for better establishment we strongly advise using Rootgrow when planting (as recommended in RHS planting guidelines).
